Labradorite owes its name to the geologist Foster who named it in reference to its place of discovery, the Canadian region of Labrador.

Labradorite presents an optical effect called “adularescence”, which owes its name to Adularia, a stone which has this same effect. It seems to light up from the inside and changes color depending on the inclination of the light rays. For this reason, the Inuit people believed that labradorite stone was a stone of fire from the Northern Lights.
